In the recent APMC

The second weekend of February 2013 was a bang for St. Luke’s College of Medicine. Amid the noise and gaiety of the Chinese New Year, St. Luke’s students celebrated three big wins of the weekend.

A group of Second Year students composed of Clint Christian Garbanzos, Maribel Jane Gavilan, Orlando Guerrero, Jr., Samantha Gutierrez, John Ellison Jamorabon, Kathrina Ana Isabel Hernandez, Roffel Felisilda, Aliza Jimenez and Michelle Esberto together with and represented by their leader, Aliana Christel Jimenez, joined the APMC Student Research Contest in the APMC Convention held in Iloilo from February 7-9, 2013. This research was done in the preceeding schoolyear as part of the requirements in their subject Preventive Medicine I and was also presented in the General Faculty-Student Assembly during the First Semester of this schoolyear. They eventually emerged as First Runner-Up in the Community and Clinical Research Division with their research entitled “Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Private Physicians on the Diagnosis and Management of Pulmonary Tuberculosis”.

On the Sunday of that weekend, February 10, 2013, St. Luke’s students were again indomitable as they competed against other medical schools in the MedRhythmia and MedGroove held at the Aliw Theatre.

With the theme of “Juan goes Broadway”, our SLCM Chorale chose to sing “Deliver Us” from the musical “Prince of Egypt”. This was rearranged and enhanced with Maranao influences to come up with a performance that showcases a unique blend of Broadway and Filipino musicality. Their next song was a captivating rendition of “All I Ask of You” from the “Phantom of the Opera” which all school participants had to sing.

For the MedGroove, the St. Luke’s Dance Company (SLDC), in keeping with the theme, came up with their own version of the musical “Dreamgirls”. The storyline focused on our Filipino “Dreamgirls”, Luz, Vi and Minda as they moved through history, from the time when lakans and datus reigned, through the centuries of oppression and colonization, to the present state of our country and their vision of the future.

With the fantastic performances of these two groups, it is no surprise that they emerged victorious.

The SLCM Chorale was awarded, “Best Choice Piece” for “Deliver Us”, “Best Contest Piece Interpretation” for “All I Ask of You” and “Best Conductor” for Derrick Fuentes, who is himself a Third Year Student at St. Luke’s College of Medicine. With all Special Awards at hand, they also were awarded CHAMPION of this year’s MedRhythmia, besting all other school participants which included ASMPH, FEU, PLM, UERM and UST.

The St. Luke’s Dance Company also garnered several special awards in MedGroove which included “People’s Choice Award”, “Most Original” and “Best in Costume” (the last two, tied with ASMPH). Though they failed to get the First Place, they nonetheless were honored to emerge as FIRST RUNNER-UP in this challenging competition. Other school participants included ASMPH, FEU, PLM, San Beda, UERM, UP and UST.
