Christmas by the Hearth

The last school day for the solar year has always been a well awaited day for both the students and faculty of the St. Luke’s College of Medicine.  This is the day that the first year students organize a fun filled Christmas party that everyone in the SLCM Family will really enjoy.

For this year, the theme conceptualized by the first year students is “Christmas by the Hearth”.  The Penthouse Lobby of the College of Medicine Building was well decorated by the students themselves.  While waiting for the guests to arrive, the Hyperhythmia band, which is composed of non other but talented first year students, graced the Lobby with alternative rock songs.  The festivities were opened with a prayer led by Carmela San Luis and Tomas Mendez who both had the voices of angels above.  Our dearest Dean Carandang shared messages for Christmas and for the upcoming year that warmed the hearts of everyone present.

Every year, both the faculty and students share a presentation for everyone to watch.  For this year, there were a total of 8 groups who participated in the presentation.  The first presentation came from the Basic Sciences who danced in the tune of “I’m So Excited”.  This was then followed by the Department of Pediatrics who danced to a melody by Madonna.  Both the Department of Ophthalmology and Department of Otorhinolaryngology shared an audio-visual presentation of what Christmas means to their department.  The last few performances were done by the students themselves.  Each year trying to show their best to win the 5,000 pesos that will go to the best performance of the night.

In a Christmas party, most will say that there are two things that they will remember.  One is the food served and second is the raffle prizes.  The food was delicious and made everyone forget their diets for the day.  For the raffle prizes, the SLCM family was so excited because for this year, Power Mac Center gave away training certificates, 500 gift certificates and t-shirts.  There were also five (5) 1000 gift certificates from Fully Booked which were given by the Office of the Assistant Medical Director for Medical Education of St. Luke's Medical Center.  For the major prizes, the Administration gave away 2 (two) Ipod Shuffles and one mini notebook, and the Department of Internal Medicine gave away a dvd player.

This Christmas Party did not just end with food, presentation and raffle prizes.  There were also Snowman Awards and Candy Cane Awards given.  But the most awaited part of the night was the awarding of the Best Presentation.  For this year,  third place went to the Third Year Students; second place went to the First Year Students; and the first place went to the Second year Students.  The awarding of the Best Presentation did not end the Christmas party.  The Hyperhythmia band again went up the stage to perform and finished the night away.
