Dr. Paul Fontelo Gives a Special Lecture to the St. Luke's Community
Last August 29, 2007, students and faculty members of the College of Medicine, as well as interested medical staff of the St. Luke's Medical Center, attended a lecture on Mobile Access to MEDLINE/PubMed to support the practice of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM). This was held in the lecture hall of the newly-renovated library at the 7th floor of the College of Medicine.
Invited speaker Paul Fontelo, MD, MPH comes from the office of the High Performance Computing and Communication of the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, USA (http://www.nlm.nih.gov). In his lecture, Dr. Fontelo pointed out how Evidence Based Medicine, which integrates the most current clinical evidence with medical experience and the patients' own values, may be placed best into practice. For EBM to be most effective, it must occur in real-time at the point of patient care. Utilization of mobile devices make access to MEDLINE/PubMed faster, thus increasing the chances that the best available evidence will be used in clinical practice and hopefully, better overall treatment outcomes.
Dr. Fontelo's visit to the College of Medicine, though short, proved to be enlightening for the ample audience who attended that day. Thanks to Dr. Michael Muin, SLMC's Medical Informatics Consultant, who eagerly facilitated the arrangements for this event.
