SLCM holds December Graduation
SLCM held a special graduation last December 18 at the CHBC Auditorium I. A total of 46 students graduated with the degree of Doctor in Medicine.
The activity started with the traditional baccalaureate mass co-celebrated by Rt. Rev. Manuel C. Lumpias, Chairman of the SLCM Board of Trustees and Rev. Fr. Florentino L. Caytap, Chaplain of the Medical Center. Present also were the administrative officials of the College led by the President and Dean, Dr. Brigido L. Carandang, Jr., faculty members and other support staff. Certainly not to miss the occasion, the proud parents of the students also joined the celebration.
The graduation proper began at around 3:30 pm ticked off by the processional of the Graduates, Faculty Members, Administrative Officials, Board of Trustees and the Guest Speaker. The College Secretary, Dr. Joanne De Ramos, acted as master of ceremonies.
To give inspiration to the graduates, the College invited Dr. Joven R. Cuanang, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Medical Director of the St. Luke's Medical Center as Guest Speaker. Dr. Carandang introduced him by way of reminiscing how the good doctor inspired to excel in his field. He also gave the audience a bird's eye view of the many accomplishments of Dr. Cuanang and his significant contribution to medical education.
Easily one of the highlights of the ceremony, Dr. Cuanang opened his speech with gratitude for inviting him as guest speaker. His inspirational talk centered on emphasizing hard work and perseverance in attaining success. He advised the would-be doctors to use the experience gained in SLCM as a springboard towards achieving greater heights, especially when its time to choose a specialization. Dr. Cuanang closed his remarks, by noting that "Success is planned", giving prominence to education and discipline as ingredients in achieving it. For a full text of the speech, please click here.
The next part of the program was the presentation of the graduates by Dean Carandang to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Rt. Rev. Manuel C. Lumpias, followed by the conferment of degree and shifting of tassel.
As the imposition of hoods and awarding of diplomas ensued, the graduates eagerly marched towards the stage accompanied by their parents and greeted by the SLCM Officials. It was a meaningful sight to behold as the proud parents excitedly posed for pictures with their sons/daughters.
Later, the graduates took their pledge of loyalty and were formally inducted to the SLCM Alumni Association.
As a tribute to their Alma Mater, the graduates sang the SLCM Hymn led by the Student Chorale and were also joined by the whole SLCM Community.
The activity was not about to end without a group picture taking of all the participants. The graduates took the opportunity to have a memorabilia with the SLCM Officials and Faculty Members who served as mentors during their stay in the College and perhaps, enduring role models for becoming medical doctors true to St. Luke's caliber.
