I. THE HISTORY OF THE MEDICAL LIBRARY
The St. Luke's Medical Library was established in 1962 primarily for making medical literature available to medical and allied health professionals of the St. Luke's Medical Center. The Library at that time was only part of the Medical Records Section of the Medical Center.
As years went by, the need to develop library services was felt. The opening of the St. Luke's College of Medicine in 1994 called for the expansion and updating of the Library's collection and services. The Library then was made part of the academic institution. As such, it has since been located at the 7th floor of the William H. Quasha Building, College of Medicine.
Now, being committed in supporting the philosophy, mission, vision and goals of the St. Luke's College of Medicine and the St. Luke's Medical Center, the medical library did not stop in improving itself in giving all that it can in providing well-organized information to its users / patrons. Aligned to this, the renovation of the entire library has been considered by the College and was finally pushed through last May 2007 and finished last August of the same year.
Currently, the St. Luke's Medical Library offers an improved, modernized facility and services that could carry out its main purposes effectively. At the same time, it keeps up with the challenges with regards to information retrieval and dissemination in the modern times.
II. MEDICAL LIBRARY PHILOSOPHY
• To be of service to both SLCM faculty and student and SLMC medical and non-medical staff, through books and other recorded knowledge
• To be of service to the society through Library Resources Sharing
• To be of help to the Institutions it serves in attaining it mission, vision and objectives
Mission
The St. Luke's Medical Library's mission is to support the information needs of the College of Medicine's faculty and students and SLMC medical and non-medical staff. The library shall provide an updated collection of library materials, information and services that will sustain our constituent's information requirements.
Vision
The Saint Luke's Medical Library envisions itself to be...
• A library with comprehensive collection of medical books, journals and other information sources in a variety of formats
• A library which evolves to meet the changing needs of its clients
• A library which provides customer-oriented services
• A library which encourages professional competencies and life-long learning
General Goal
The St. Luke's Medical Library through its collection, facilities, technologies and services shall be the center of information and curricular activity of both SLCM and SLMC community.
"We aim to deliver quality and customer-oriented services".
III. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
At present, the newly renovated medical library is located at the 7th floor straddling a floor area of 753.75 square meters, occupying the entire floor together with the William H. Quasha Museum. Principally it caters basic library services through its two vital areas: the Technical Services and Public Services, under these services are the six basic service areas: the Reserve, Circulation & Reference Section, Borrowing and Returning Section, Multi-Media Section, Periodical Section and the Technical Section.
Aside from these, it also provides two (2) discussion rooms, a lecture hall, a viewing room, two (2) reading areas and a lounge area. The entire area is air-conditioned and well-lighted.
IV. LIBRARY SECTIONS
Reserve, Circulation, Reference & Filipiniana Section
Implementing the policies and procedures concerning the borrowing and returning of books borrowed for room use, overnight / one week loan, as well as for photocopying purposes by SLCM (St. Luke's College of Medicine) students, faculty, staff and SLMC (St. Luke's Medical Center) medical and non-medical employees are systematically carried out in this section. Its other function is the issuing of fines for overdue books.
Borrowing and Returning Section (Counter Area)
All the books borrowed at the Reserve, Circulation & Reference Section must be check-in/check-out first in this section through the integrated library system that the medical library uses.
For the queries and necessary assistance, students or any other patron could go to this area as well. It also provides the necessary permits and reservations for certain facilities that the library offers.
Multimedia Section
This section holds twenty (10) computer units and can well provide services such as: Internet access for research, academic and other instructional purposes, browsing of available on-line journals plus processing, printing and scanning of documents and the like. Browsing of CD-ROMs and other digital collection of the library is also provided and facilitated in this section.
Periodical Section
This section consists of more than a hundred titles of bound and unbound professional medical journals (Print & On-Line) and non-medical magazines such as Newsweek, Time, Popular Science, Discovery and Health Today to support the clinical research and educational needs of the users as well as for general information and leisure reading.
Technical Section
Acquisition work along with cataloging and classification of books are analytically done in this section supporting the progress and maintenance of information systems and resources of the medical library. This is the section responsible for the evaluation of books to be acquired through the help of various department heads and consultants of the Medical Center. It keeps library records such as: accession record, shelf list and list of newly acquired books. It maintains the consistency and accuracy of the information found at the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog).

V. LIBRARY FACILITIES
a.) Discussion Rooms
Two discussion rooms are provided to accommodate group studies, discussions, small conferences, meetings and other pursuits. Discussion Room A can accommodate six (6) to ten (10) persons while Discussion Room B can accommodate eighth (8) to fifteen (15) persons.
Library patrons who wish to use the discussion rooms are subject to the following regulations:
- Reservation should be made at the counter / information desk.
- "First come, first served basis" will and shall be always implemented.
- The group may stay for a maximum of 2 hours.
b.) Lecture Hall
The lecture hall has the capacity to accommodate up to seventy (70) persons. It is intended for large group functions such as conferences, lectures and trainings.
Library patrons who wish to use the lecture hall are subject to the following regulations:
- A request letter approved by the Dean must be presented at the counter / information desk at least 24 before the function.
- "First come, first served basis" will and shall be always implemented.
c.) Viewing Room
To accommodate the usage of AV materials, a viewing room is provided. It can admit at least ten (10) to fifteen (15) persons. Necessary reservation should be accomplished at the counter / information desk.
d.) Reading Areas
The reading area comprises of two reading rooms. Both reading rooms comprise of 4- to 6-seater tables and high-seated tables along the windows intently designed for laptop use.
e.) Lounge Area
The basic function of this area is to provide space for students during their spare time. It can have twenty five (25) to thirty (30) persons all at the same instant. Magazines and newspaper are readily available at the circulation section if they wish to read at this area.
f.) Photocopying Area
Photocopying services are also provided at the Library Lobby from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday only.
g.) OPAC Area

VI. LIBRARY COLLECTION
The St. Luke's Medical Library Collection is considered special because of the nature of the majority of its collection. The Medical Library Collection is divided into seven(7) categories: (1) General Circulation Book Collection (2) Reference Book Collection (3) Filipiniana Book Collection (4) Reserve Book Collection (5) Continuing Resources / Periodical Collection (printed format) (6) Audio-Visual Collection and (7) Electronic or On-line Resources (Internet, On-line Journals & E-Books).
The Medical Library maintains a collection of almost 4,870 volumes of medical books. These books are categorized into four types: Reserve Books, General Circulation Books, Reference Books and Filipiniana.
The Reserve Book collection consists of textbooks and collateral reading materials recommended by SLCM faculty members as required reading for their courses and for the shared use of all students enrolled in these courses.
The General Circulation Book collection comprises the majority of the book collection. The materials are recommended by the SLCM Dean, Department Heads / Chairpersons and Consultants as added information sources in the field of medicine.
The Reference Book collection consists of general reference materials such as atlases, encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries, bibliographies, indexes and others which fall under the same category.
The Filipiniana Book collection comprise just a small number of the book collection. These materials are also recommended by the SLCM Dean, Department Heads / Chairpersons and Consultants as added information sources in the field of medicine. These collections are works of Filipino authors and books which deal with Philippine settings.
The Medical Library also has a collection of more than a hundred titles of medical journals (Print & On-Line) and non-medical magazines such as Newsweek, Time, Popular Science, Discovery and Health Today to support the clinical research and educational needs of the users as well as for general information and leisure reading.
Audio Visual materials are also available for viewing in the Library such as VHS tapes, Cassette tapes, Slides, CD-ROMs, etc. As the AV collection is still being developed and upgraded, users may bring their own AV materials for the use of the equipment. However, only AV materials with medical or scholastic content will be allowed for use of the equipment.

ONLINE RESOURCES
The Medical Library also subscribes to online journals to have fast access to latest information on the field of Medicine.
MD Consult
The MDConsult is an online service that provides an array of medical information. It is an integration of peer-reviewed resources from over 50 publishers, medical societies and government agencies. To view the MDConsult core collection, go to http://www.mdconsult.com
MSD Journals
The inter-library cooperation between Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) Philippines and St. Luke's College of Medicine helps the St. Luke's Community access On-line Journals through the assistance of MSD Resource Center. Because of license restrictions, access to these journals can only be done through email.
Because retrieval of requested articles took 2-3 days processing, the MSD Resource Center has agreed to put up our own link on the access of its online medical journals for easy retrieval or over the counter service. This is now in its primary implementation stage.

IX. CURRENT AWARENESS BULLETIN SERVICE
YEARLY RENEWAL OF KEY CARDS
As year 2011 took in, active users of library card were to renew and update their accounts on use of key card as library card to respond to the needs of securing the library facilities and services from unauthorized users.
All library users will be required to apply for a library account and to avail of the library key card.
Each user will be validated before the issuance of a key card. A unique barcode in the key card will be the library user’s pass code in registering to the library auto LOGME and in borrowing of any library materials.

Recent Roster of College Faculty will be the basis for faculties.
